A Calico Strolls Off With a Whole Hot Dog Bun
The bun is nearly as long as her face, and the calico is carrying it like a prize. She stands at the edge of a kitchen counter with the bread clamped gently between her teeth, her big amber eyes opened wide, her white chest and orange-and-black patches filling the frame. A scatter of crumbs on the counter shows where she found it.
Behind her the kitchen is soft and out of focus, with a dish towel draped over a cabinet door and a wall of cream paint. Everything seems to have gone still for a moment, as if the whole room is waiting to see what she will do next.
Many cats are happy to grab human food when nobody is looking, but bread is not a great snack for them. Plain bread is not usually toxic, though it offers little nutrition, and a cat eating too much can end up with an upset tummy. Bread dough is much more dangerous, and so are seasoned buns with onion or garlic. Cats thrive on balanced cat food, with treats kept to a small portion of the day's calories. Keep the counters cleared if your cat is a thief, and talk to your vet before giving any people food as a treat.
Calicos have a reputation for confident, spunky personalities, and this one is living up to it. She came for a snack, and the whole kitchen has noticed.
