The Treat Bag Was Sealed. The Black Lab Had Other Plans.

A black Labrador sits tall on the hardwood floor, gazing upward with soft brown eyes that say a lot without any words. Beside him, a ripped-open bag of crunchy treats has slumped onto its side, and a trail of little brown pieces leads across the boards. A basket of toys sits behind him, a pair of slippers rests by the couch, and a water bowl waits in the corner. We'll call him Midnight, and he'd love you to know he was only checking on the bag.

Labradors are famous for their enthusiasm for food, and many are happy to eat as much as they can find. Treats and kibble stored where a dog can reach them are a common cause of trouble, and eating a big amount can lead to an upset stomach. Feeding measured portions, keeping bags in a closed container or high cabinet, and counting treats toward daily calories all help prevent weight gain, which is common in the breed. Talk to your vet about how much your dog should eat. A snuffle mat or food puzzle can make mealtime more fun and slow him down too.

Midnight seems to understand that the evidence is all around him, but his eyes remain hopeful. He may just be waiting to see whether anybody will offer a second helping out of pity. The bag, sadly, has already given everything it had.
