The Trash Can Was Upright This Morning. The Sphynx Had a Different View.
With ears like satellite dishes and a wrinkled pink body that glows in the lamplight, a hairless Sphynx sits tall beside a tipped-over metal trash can. Garbage is strewn across the floor behind her, with a banana peel, a tub of yogurt, crumpled wrappers, bits of lettuce and a halved onion trailing from the open can. In the background, the kitchen counter holds a bag of fruit, a cutting board, a jacket and a set of keys. Her golden eyes look up with a guilty glint. We'll call her Pearl Pink.
Sphynx cats look hairless, but they actually have a fine fuzz that feels like warm suede. They are social, energetic and affectionate, and they love being close to their people, often seeking out warm laps. Because they have no thick coat to absorb skin oils, they often need regular baths, and they can get chilly or sunburned easily. Kitchen trash holds many hazards, including onions, which are harmful to cats, so a lidded can or a cupboard is the best option. If your cat eats something worrying, call your vet. A heated bed and a toy to keep her busy can be great additions.
Pearl Pink waits calmly for the verdict. She has no hair to hide behind, but she has a lot of confidence. Somebody will need gloves and a mop, and she will need a nice warm blanket.
