The Cookout Was All Set. Then a Yellow Lab Grabbed the Bun.
Eyes wide open and brow wrinkled, a yellow Labrador sits in the middle of the kitchen with an entire hot dog bun clamped in his mouth. The bun is crumbly at one end and dented with tooth marks, and the Lab has frozen in place with an expression like a spotlight just caught him. Sunlight spills across the floor and cabinets, and a jacket hangs over a hamper while a water bottle waits by the wall. His golden ears droop slightly. We'll call him Sunny Bun, and he hopes you didn't see.
Labradors are friendly, outgoing dogs with an enormous love of food, and they are among the most popular breeds in the country. That appetite can lead them straight to trouble, and it also makes them prone to gaining weight, so measured meals and regular exercise are important. A bun by itself is not usually harmful in a small amount, but hot dog toppings like onions are not safe for dogs, and large amounts of bread can upset a stomach. A Lab that steals something should be offered a swap, such as a toy or a treat, instead of being chased. If your dog eats something worrying, call your vet.
Sunny Bun has the freeze-frame look of a dog who knows that the next move matters. He holds on tightly, ready to claim his prize. The cookout is going to need a new bun, and one cheerful Lab will likely be sitting very close to the grill.
