One Cardboard Box Was Sitting Quietly. The Grumpy Tabby Disagreed.

With his flat face scrunched into a frown, a plump red tabby Exotic Shorthair sits on a sunlit wooden floor and looks off to the side. Beside him, a cardboard box has been torn open on one side, and pieces of brown cardboard scatter across the boards. His amber eyes look grumpy, and his stripes glow like marmalade in the light. In the background, a wicker basket of dried branches, a plant, a couch with a mustard blanket and a table with crayons and toys fill the room. We'll call him Waffle, and he looks like he isn't in the mood.

Exotic Shorthairs have the teddy-bear face of a Persian and a short, plush coat that is easier to care for. They are quiet, affectionate and fairly laid-back, but they still enjoy a good game, and a box is almost always a great toy for a cat. Cats love scratching and shredding cardboard because it is the right texture to dig into with their claws. A flat-faced cat should have his eyes wiped gently and be monitored in hot weather, since short noses can make breathing harder. An extra box with a scratcher pad can keep a cat happy while saving the furniture.

Waffle has the look of a cat who thinks he's done a fine job, and he's not sure why everyone is staring. The box will go in the recycling, and a new one will probably appear soon. He'll sit in the middle of it with the same frown.
