The Shoes Were by the Door. The Bichon Frise Gave Them a Makeover.

A snowy white Bichon Frise sits proudly next to a heap of shoes that have seen better days. Leather has been chewed away from the toes, laces dangle, and little bits of fuzzy lining are scattered across the floor. His fluffy cloud of a coat looks perfectly clean, and his dark eyes are pointed away, off at something he finds much more interesting. Behind him, a woven laundry basket, a green plant and a rumpled couch wait in the soft light. We'll call him Frosty, and he's innocent as snow.

Bichon Frises are cheerful, playful small dogs with a curly, powder-puff coat that needs regular brushing and trimming. They are friendly and sociable, and they can get anxious if left alone too long, which sometimes shows up as chewing. Shoes smell strongly of their owners, which makes them a favorite target. Chewed shoes can hide hazards such as bits of rubber, metal or glue, so keep footwear in a closet and give him durable chew toys. If your dog swallows something he shouldn't, call your vet. A short walk and a game before leaving the house can help calm a restless pup.

Frosty gives no hint of regret. He is gazing off into the distance as if the shoes simply fell apart in the night. The family will be doing some shopping soon, and he'll probably be looking for a new target.
