Someone Started Baking, Left the Room, and the Cat Took Over

Flour is everywhere, and Biscuit the gray Exotic Shorthair would like you to believe he has no idea why. A fine white dusting covers his forehead, nose and the front of his chest, and a few floury paw prints trail across the counter beside two metal spoons. Dirty bowls and a crowded sink crowd the background, and the morning light slants in through the window. Biscuit sits tall and stares off to the side with his round, copper eyes, the classic look of a cat who is avoiding all questions.

Exotic Shorthairs are often described as the easygoing cousins of the Persian. They have the same round face and sweet expression with a short, plush coat that needs less grooming, though a weekly brush is still a good idea. They tend to be quiet, affectionate and happy to follow you around the house. Their flat faces can make them prone to tear staining, so a gentle wipe of the eye area is part of regular care, and your vet can offer advice. As for kitchen counters, cats are drawn to them because they are high, warm and full of interesting smells. Wiping surfaces, storing food in sealed containers and giving your cat a tall perch of its own can make the counter less tempting. A little flour is harmless in small amounts, but keep an eye on what your cat samples.

Biscuit will get a damp cloth and a gentle talking-to, and he will accept both with great dignity. The cookies will have to be started over.
