An Abyssinian Found the Trash Bag and Had a Little Party
The black garbage bag has been torn wide open on the lawn, banana peels and scraps fanned out across the grass, and right in the middle of it all lies Rusty the cinnamon Abyssinian with a tiny, satisfied smile. His big ears stand straight up, his warm ruddy coat glows in the afternoon light, and one paw rests on the edge of the bag as though he is claiming it. A weathered wooden fence and a few potted plants frame the scene, which looks very much like the aftermath of an early morning expedition.
Abyssinians are among the most active and curious of all cats. They are lean, athletic and famous for climbing, exploring and getting into things, so a bag of interesting smells is hard for them to resist. They usually do best with plenty of play, tall cat trees and puzzle toys that keep their clever minds busy. Garbage is a real concern for any pet, though, because spoiled food, bones, wrappers and packaging can make animals sick or cause choking. Using a bin with a tight lid, keeping bags inside until pickup and checking that your cat has not eaten anything unusual are simple habits that help. If your cat has swallowed something it should not have, call your vet for advice.
Rusty looks delighted with his morning treasure hunt, and the cleanup crew has quite the job ahead. It is hard to stay cross at a face that pleased.
