The Homework Is in Pieces, and the Devon Rex Won't Look at Us

The homework was supposed to be due tomorrow, and now it is mostly confetti. Raven the black Devon Rex sits at the edge of the desk with his big, bat-like ears pointed away from the pile of shredded notebook pages beside him. His short wavy coat looks velvety against the pale paper, and he turns his face aside so that no one can accuse him of anything. A mug, a pair of glasses and a crumpled blanket fill the background of the cluttered desk, and a drift of paper scraps covers the surface.

Devon Rex cats stand out for their curly, soft fur, large ears and pixie-like faces. They are energetic, social and often described as clownish, and many love to perch on shoulders and follow their people around. Because they are clever and playful, they need plenty to do, and a bored Devon may take up paper shredding. Giving your cat toys that can be tossed and chased, along with puzzle feeders and a cat tree by the window, can be a better outlet. Their thin coat means they sometimes seek warm places, like laps or sunny desks, so a heated-safe cat bed can be a nice touch. Paper is not good to swallow in large amounts, so tidy up torn scraps, and mention it to your vet if your cat keeps eating paper.

Raven may have to write an excuse note, but paws are not great pen holders. Teachers have heard stranger stories.
