A French Bulldog Smiles Next to the Armchair He Just Scratched Up

AI imagefrench bulldogleather chairliving room

The leather armchair has seen better days, with long scratches and peeling patches along its arm, and Pierre the black and white French Bulldog sits next to it with a tiny, guilty smile. His big bat ears stand tall, his dark eyes shine and his white chest gleams. A basket of toys, a rope chew and a pile of blankets sit behind him in a bright room with a framed picture on the wall. He looks as if he would like to claim that the chair came like that.

French Bulldogs are small, affectionate companions with their trademark bat ears and a playful, clownish personality. They are usually social and happy to live in apartments, but their flat faces make them sensitive to heat and exercise, so keep walks short on warm days and talk to your vet about breathing concerns. Dogs may scratch or chew furniture out of boredom, excitement, anxiety or a desire for attention. Provide plenty of chew toys, scheduled playtime and a comfortable bed of their own. A spritz of a pet-safe deterrent on the furniture, or a cover over the chair, can discourage the habit. Make sure any chewed pieces of leather or stuffing are not swallowed, and call your vet if you are worried. Frenchies thrive on companionship, so spending time together can ease the scratching.

Pierre will get a new toy and some gentle redirection. The chair may heal, and his smile will survive.
