The Royal Huntsman Wears Green Velvet and a Gentle Gaze
Field and forest are calling, and the royal huntsman is dressed for them. A tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog looks straight at us, his black coat and rich rust cheeks set off by a white blaze that runs from forehead to chest. His coat is deep green velvet with gold trim and a row of round brass buttons, and a puff of white lace tops the collar. One shoulder carries a small gold tassel, and the background fades into brown shadow like a forest at dusk.
The eyes are what draw you in. Warm brown and a little worried, they give the huntsman a gentle, thoughtful look that suggests he would rather be taking a long walk than anything else.
Berners come from the farmland of Switzerland, where they pulled carts and kept watch over livestock. Today they are known for a sweet, easygoing temperament, and many are devoted to their families. Their thick double coat is made for cold weather, so they can overheat in the summer, and they shed quite a lot, so regular brushing helps. Berners are big and need daily exercise, but they are usually happiest being close to their people. They also have shorter lifespans than many breeds, so regular vet visits and a healthy weight are especially important.
The huntsman may be wearing his best coat, but we think the ideal day is a cool afternoon and a long, slow walk with someone he loves.
