The Duchess Wore the Feathered Hat and Kept One Ear Ready
The feathers on her hat are almost as plumed as her fur. The red merle Australian Shepherd wears a teal velvet hat decorated with long brown feathers, a ruffle of lace at her neck and several loops of pearls over a gold and teal brocade gown. Her face is mottled copper and white, with light, alert eyes that are possibly blue, and a candle flame glows warm on the right side of the dark canvas. The duchess holds still with great patience, though her ears seem ready to flick.
Australian Shepherds were developed in the American West as ranch dogs, and they are famous for their intelligence and stamina. They are happiest with a job to do, whether that is agility, herding games, hiking or learning new tricks. Without exercise and mental work, an Aussie may invent her own amusements, like herding family members or digging. Their double coat sheds, so regular brushing is helpful, and their merle coats come in beautiful patterns. Training should be consistent and kind, and early socialization helps shy puppies feel at home. Many Aussies bond very strongly with one family, and they love being included in everything. Your vet can advise on exercise levels and health screenings.
The duchess may look elegant in her hat, but part of her is still thinking about sheep.
