The Admiral Looked Over His Fleet With Humble Pride
Long ears, glossy chocolate fur and a dark, moist nose give the Dachshund admiral a sweet, serious air. His navy coat fastens with a row of small gold frogging and leaf embroidery on the collar, and a great gold epaulette with a swinging tassel sits on his shoulder. Behind him, a Renaissance landscape of cliffs, trees and a gentle river glows in pale blue and green. His brown eyes gaze out with humble pride, as though he cannot quite believe he commands the whole fleet.
Dachshunds are known as brave little hunters, and they also have a famously dramatic voice. Training them takes patience, since they are clever and sometimes stubborn, and short sessions with treats work better than long drills. Protect that long spine by using ramps, discouraging jumping off furniture and keeping your dog at a healthy weight. Lift him with one hand under the chest and one supporting the hindquarters. Chocolate is the color of his coat, but it is also a real danger when eaten, since chocolate is toxic to dogs, so keep candy and baking supplies well out of reach. If your dog does get into chocolate, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away.
The admiral has the whole fleet in order, and a long nap awaits in the captain's quarters. Even an admiral needs a soft blanket, and he will inspect it at once, then tuck in his long nose.
