The Aussie Captain Kept a Sharp Watch Over a Very Small Crew
A black tricorn hat with gold trim sits above the Aussie's face, which is black, white and tan, with copper eyebrows and a white blaze down the middle. The captain's navy coat has gold buttons, leafy gold embroidery on the collar and heavy gold epaulettes, and a thick white beard of chest fur spills out of the collar. Behind him, a Victorian parlor with green and gold wallpaper and a deep green curtain keeps the scene dignified. His amber eyes are bright and watchful, and his chin is lifted a little.
Australian Shepherds are agile herding dogs, and the black tricolor coat with copper points is one of several colors the breed comes in. Despite the name, the breed was developed in the American West. Aussies are known for loyalty, stamina and a strong drive to work, and they often do well in agility, obedience and trick training. Without outlets, they may herd family members, nip at heels or chew furniture. A good routine of exercise, training and puzzle toys helps. Their thick coat sheds and needs brushing a few times a week. Some Aussies can be reserved with strangers, so early social experiences help. Ask your vet about health screening and care for this energetic breed.
The captain keeps a sharp watch over the crew, and that crew is, as usual, a chair, a sofa and a squeaky duck.
