The Dalmatian Marquis Wore the Biggest Ruff in the Palace
The ruff is wide enough to frame his whole face like a painting of its own, and the marquis wears it like a prince. A white Dalmatian with glossy black spots gazes out with big dark eyes, his ears hanging in spotted folds beside his face. A great white lace collar rings his neck in layers like a pleated flower, and his navy velvet coat is fastened with gold braid and tiny knots. The background is a deep, warm darkness lit by the faint glow of a candle, and the painted surface is cracked with age.
Dalmatians are lively, athletic dogs that need a great deal of exercise, such as long walks, runs, and games of fetch. They are loyal and intelligent, though they can be sensitive and need patient, kind training. Without enough activity they may become restless. They are born white, and their spots develop in the first weeks of life. Their short coat sheds year-round, so a regular brushing helps. Early socialization is useful, and your vet can help with diet, exercise, and long-term care.
Every spot looks hand-placed, and the dark navy of the coat sets them off beautifully. Beneath the grand ruff the marquis wears a calm, steady expression, like a gentleman who has seen many parties. After the portrait is done, he will probably run several energetic laps around the palace, ruff and all, before settling down for the night.
