The Cat in the Plumed Helmet Had Clearly Been Put in Charge
A ruddy Abyssinian cat wears a gleaming helmet topped with a great sweep of black and gray plumes, and somehow it sits perfectly between those big, pointed ears. His green coat has gold epaulettes and braided trim, and his amber eyes look straight at the viewer with calm authority. A candle burns in the dark behind him, giving the brass a warm shine and the fur a glow like polished copper.
Abyssinians are slender, athletic cats with a warm coat marked by tiny bands of color on each hair, a pattern called ticking. They are known as curious, energetic and playful, and they tend to love climbing and exploring. Many do best with tall perches, puzzle toys and daily play sessions, which help burn off all that busy curiosity in a healthy way. A bored Abyssinian can get creative, so a few new toys now and then are a good idea.
The painter gave the cat a surprisingly noble profile. A helmet that big might topple most cats, but here the posture is straight and proud, as if he were about to review his troops and find a few crumbs on the floor that needed attention. The plume alone deserves its own spot in a gallery.
Cavalry officers needed courage and a good eye, and this cat looks like he has both, plus the perfect plume to go with them.
