The Bernese Ambassador Held the Sealed Scroll Like a Treasure
A black velvet cap rests on top of a glossy black head with rust-colored eyebrows and a white blaze, and under the chin a soft white chest of fur peeks out from a green cloak trimmed in white ermine. This Bernese Mountain Dog ambassador holds a small scroll with a red wax seal in one white-pawed hand, resting it on his knee. His sleeves are red and gold, and the dim green and gold wall behind him gives a solemn feel. Ambassador Alpine looks like he carries news of great importance, or at least news of dinner.
Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the Swiss farms around Bern, where they pulled carts and guarded livestock. They are known as sweet, calm, loyal and fond of their families, and they make patient companions for children. Their thick coat sheds a lot, so regular brushing is helpful, and they prefer cool weather. Because they are large, they should be fed and exercised carefully as puppies. Sadly, the breed has a shorter life span than many dogs, so regular vet care and a healthy weight are especially important. Many Bernese love gentle hikes and cuddling up close.
The message is sealed and the messenger is steady. Whatever the scroll says, it will arrive safely in the paws of the most trustworthy dog at court.
