Three Shepherd Pups Got a Kiddie Pool. One Took the Lifeguard Job Seriously.
Splash! Three black and tan German Shepherd puppies are wading through a shallow blue kiddie pool, sending droplets flying in every direction. The pup on the left has lifted one front paw high, mid-stomp, with a big open-mouthed grin. The middle one stands tall with water spraying around his legs, and the third leans forward with a serious, determined look, as if he is the lifeguard on duty. The pool has been set up indoors on a wooden floor, with a basket of towels, a pair of slippers and a potted plant nearby, which suggests someone planned for the mess.
Many dogs enjoy water, and a kiddie pool is a gentle way to introduce puppies to it. Keep the water shallow enough that they can stand comfortably, stay right beside them the whole time, and let them choose how far to go in. Never force a nervous pup into water, as positive first experiences matter. Not every dog is a natural swimmer, so if you later visit lakes or pools, a well-fitted dog life jacket is a smart idea. After water play, dry your puppy thoroughly, paying attention to the ears, since moisture trapped there can lead to irritation. Talk to your vet if ears seem red or smelly.
On hot summer days, a kiddie pool in a shady part of the yard can help dogs stay cool, too.
These three clearly need no convincing. If anything, the hard part will be getting them out.
