Four Black Puppies on a Cream Rug, and One of Them Isn't Sleeping
Sunlight filters through a gauzy curtain onto a fluffy cream rug, and four black German Shepherd puppies have arranged themselves in a sleepy cluster right in the middle of it. The pup at the front right lifts his head with curious, light-catching eyes, while the others lie with chins on paws, eyelids drooping. Their coats are thick and dark with faint hints of brown at the muzzle and paws. A woven basket stuffed with toys, a pair of sneakers, a stack of folded jeans and a leafy houseplant fill the background of this lived-in, cozy room.
Black German Shepherds are sometimes mistaken for a separate breed, but they are the same German Shepherd, simply with a solid black coat. Their personality, intelligence and care needs match those of their black and tan relatives. Like all shepherds, they shed a lot, especially during seasonal coat changes, so plush rugs like this one will collect plenty of fur. A good brushing routine a few times a week, plus a sturdy vacuum, helps keep things manageable. Introducing grooming tools early, with treats and gentle handling, teaches puppies that brushing is a pleasant part of the day rather than something to wiggle away from.
Soft rugs also give puppies better traction than slick floors, which can help clumsy little legs as they play and explore.
This rug may be covered in black fluff by evening, but with company like this, nobody will mind.
