One Stripe of Sun Hit the Floor. A Tiny Dachshund Found It in Seconds.
A single stripe of afternoon sun falls across the hardwood floor, and one small puppy has found it with perfect precision. The black and tan Dachshund lies on its side, glossy coat gleaming, tan paws stretched out and floppy ears spread across the boards. Its sleepy brown eyes are barely open, as if it's deciding whether a nap is worth the effort. It is. Nearby, a houseplant trails over the edge of a white pot, and a cozy throw hangs off the furniture in the soft, warm light.
Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers, which explains their long bodies, short legs, and surprisingly bold personalities. Today they're loyal, playful companions who often bond closely with their families. That long back needs protecting, though. Dachshunds are prone to back problems, so it's wise to discourage jumping off furniture and to use ramps or steps for couches and beds. Keeping them at a healthy weight also reduces strain on the spine. When picking up a Dachshund puppy, always support both the chest and the hindquarters so the back stays level. Puppies sleep a great deal while they grow, so plenty of quiet nap spots like this one are a good thing.
Some puppies chase balls. Others chase sunbeams across the floor all afternoon. This little one has clearly found its calling, and it looks like a very comfortable one.
