A Neat Row of Rain Boots in the Mudroom. Something Was Hiding in the Last One.

A neat row of rain boots lines the mudroom wall: olive green, pink, mustard yellow, and a tall black pair at the very end. And peeking out of that last black boot is a tiny dapple Dachshund with one paw draped over the rim. Its fluffy coat is a speckled mix of silver, black, and tan, with feathery tufts on its ears and a sweet brown gaze. It looks completely unbothered, as if this is simply where it lives now. A woven rug, a pair of umbrellas, and a plaid throw on a wooden bench fill out the cozy entryway.

Small, cozy spaces like boots, boxes, and baskets are a magnet for Dachshund puppies. It's that burrowing instinct again, combined with a puppy's natural curiosity about anything that smells like its people. Shoes and boots carry strong, familiar scents, which also makes them tempting to chew. Puppy-proofing the entryway helps a lot: store footwear on a shelf or in a closed cabinet, and offer plenty of safe chew toys instead. Boots worn outdoors can also carry lawn chemicals, road salt, or de-icers on their soles, which aren't healthy for a puppy to lick or gnaw, so a quick wipe-down is a good habit in wet or snowy weather.

This little one may never be able to wear these boots, but it has certainly found another use for them. Rainy days just got a lot more charming.
