Two Yellow Lab Puppies Argued Over One Bright Green Tennis Ball
A bright green tennis ball is about to be the center of a very serious dispute. Two yellow Labrador Retriever puppies are crouched over it, one with a paw on top and the other leaning in with his mouth open. Their ears are perked, their eyes locked on the prize, and behind them is a cozy living room with baskets and a sofa.
It's no surprise that Labs love balls: retrieving is in their blood. The breed was developed to fetch game for hunters, and many Labs still have a strong desire to pick things up and carry them. For puppies, short games of fetch on soft ground are plenty. Their joints and bones are still growing, so avoid high jumps and long runs, and keep play sessions brief. Choose balls that are large enough that they can't be swallowed, and replace worn tennis balls because the fuzz can wear down teeth. Playing with another puppy teaches manners too, since puppies learn when to be gentle. Teach a cue like "drop it" with treats, so the ball can always be traded. Ask your vet about the best exercise for your puppy.
Whichever pup ends up with the ball, the game will probably start again. Neither is likely to give up. A tennis ball is a very small thing to fight over, but to a puppy it looks like the greatest treasure ever found.
