A Spaniel Pup Rolled Over in the Evening Grass With a Look
The lawn is all his. A brown-and-white puppy has flopped onto his back on the evening grass, legs splayed, ears fallen to the side, and a bit of grass stuck to his coat. His eyes look sideways with a mischievous, sleepy glint. In the soft dusk light, a green watering can and a wooden fence stand behind him, along with a few garden plants.
Rolling on the grass is a normal canine behavior. Dogs roll to scratch an itch, to stretch, and sometimes just for the joy of it. A pup who rolls, then looks at you with a relaxed face, is usually very comfortable. It is still a good idea to check your puppy's coat for ticks, seeds, or burrs after outdoor play, especially in a breed with feathery fur. Regular brushing makes this easy.
Cocker Spaniels are often called merry dogs, and a roll on the lawn matches that reputation. They tend to do well with daily play and a family that includes them in activities. A puppy like this one needs protection from lawn chemicals, so always check that treatments have dried before letting him on the grass, and talk to your vet if you have concerns.
As the evening light fades, this little one has no plans to get up. The best seat in the yard is the ground, belly up.
