Four Black Puppies Stood at the Edge of the Pond and Looked In
Four black puppies are huddled on a mossy stone edge, and the dark pond water lies right beside them. They look out with alert, round eyes, ears curled and dewy. One at the left tilts his head, one in the center seems to be studying the water, and two peer toward us. A tipped-over blue bucket, a garden hose, a clay pot, and a stack of twigs sit behind them, giving the yard a lived-in look.
Cocker Spaniels descend from sporting dogs and many enjoy water, but a pond is no place for an unsupervised puppy. Moss is slippery, banks can be steep, and a small pup can tire quickly in the water. Stagnant water may carry bacteria or algae that are harmful to dogs, so it is best to discourage drinking from it. Keep your puppies on a leash or fenced away from open water until they are bigger and well trained.
If your puppy does take a dip, rinse his coat with clean water and dry his ears well, since spaniel ears can hold moisture. Talk to your vet about any signs of stomach upset after a swim. Introducing water gradually, in clean and shallow settings, gives a puppy confidence.
These four stand shoulder to shoulder like a tiny patrol. Whatever lurks in the pond, they have it under control.
