Two Black and Tan Chihuahua Puppies Explored the Tall Grass Together

Two black and tan Chihuahua puppies sit in tall green grass that nearly reaches their chests. Their ears are enormous and alert, their eyes are dark and curious, and their fluffy chests have neat tan patches. Behind them, a blue bucket, a sandal, a few garden tools and a wooden fence hint at a well-used yard. They look like a tiny pair of explorers who have just stepped into a jungle.

Tall grass is an adventure for a small dog, but also hides risks. Ticks, fleas, burrs and foxtails all love long grass, so check your puppies after time outside and talk to your vet about prevention. Because Chihuahuas are so small, keep a close eye on them, since they can disappear in tall vegetation. Provide shade and fresh water on warm days, and keep outdoor time short. Make sure the yard is fenced securely, since a tiny dog can slip through a small gap.

A harness is safer than a collar for tiny dogs. A Chihuahua's bark can be surprisingly loud, and calm, consistent training can teach the difference between a useful alert and a habit. Many Chihuahuas live a long time, so a puppy chosen today may be a companion for well over a decade. Many Chihuahuas love a lap, a sunny spot and a soft blanket more than almost anything else in the world.

For now, the two sit and look out at their jungle, and the afternoon is calm.
