A Black Shepherd Puppy Let Out the Biggest Yawn on the Couch
Mouth wide open, pink tongue curled up, a black puppy yawns enormously on a gray couch. Her ears sit back, her eyes squint a little, and her nose is still glossy and black. Around her, a jacket, a pair of jeans, and a stack of folded blankets cover the couch, and a window behind brings in the late light.
Yawning in puppies has a few common reasons: sleepiness is the obvious one, but dogs also yawn when they are anticipating something or when they feel a little unsure. Reading the whole body, including ears, tail, and posture, tells you more than a single yawn does. This pup looks relaxed, so a nap is probably coming.
Growing shepherd puppies need a lot of sleep, often more than people expect, so quiet downtime is just as important as play. Teaching a young dog to settle on a mat or blanket is an excellent skill for such an active breed. Couches can be tempting, but high furniture can be risky for small pups who might jump off and hurt themselves, so a ramp or a lift is a good idea. If you notice unusual lethargy, talk to your vet.
Still, a yawn this big has earned a long nap, and the couch looks like the perfect place to take it. Her ears are still soft and floppy, and tomorrow they may stand a little taller.
