The Basset Pup Who Became the Prettiest Flower in the Tulip Bed
Wisps of fluffy fur stick up from the head of a lemon and white Basset Hound puppy sitting calmly in the middle of a tulip bed. Pink and yellow blooms crowd around, a few leaning in as though they wanted a closer look at those enormous velvety ears. The puppy's dark eyes look straight ahead with a gentle, slightly puzzled expression, and the soft light of early morning gives the whole garden a hazy glow.
Basset Hounds were bred to follow scent trails close to the ground, so a garden is a feast for a puppy like this. Every leaf and flower bed holds a thousand smells, and a Basset's nose will lead the way whether you like it or not. That makes a securely fenced yard important, because a Basset on a scent can forget all about coming back when called. A sturdy leash on walks is a good habit too.
Gardeners should also know that some popular spring flowers, tulip bulbs among them, can upset a dog's stomach if chewed or dug up. If you share your yard with a curious puppy, keep bulbs out of reach and ask your vet about plants that are safe to have around.
This little one seems to understand the assignment for today, which is to sit very still and look wonderful. The tulips are bright, the grass is damp, and there is nothing to do but let the nose take in the morning.
