A Sleepy Basset Pup Has Taken Over the Patchwork Quilt
A tricolor Basset Hound puppy is sound asleep on a patchwork quilt, stretched out in a long diagonal with the back paws trailing off toward the corner. The quilt is a pretty jumble of faded florals, checks, and calico squares, and the pup's ears fan out onto the patches like velvet curtains. A mug, a stack of open books, a clay pot, and a heap of knitted blankets fill the background, giving the room a quiet, lived-in feel.
Puppies fall asleep suddenly and deeply, sometimes mid-play. This is perfectly normal. Growing puppies need many hours of sleep each day to build their bodies and process everything they are learning, and a well-rested puppy is usually a calmer, easier puppy to train. A regular nap schedule, in a quiet spot, helps them settle.
It is also common to see a sleeping puppy twitch, paddle its feet, or let out a tiny squeak. That is usually just dreaming, and it is best to let them be. Washable bedding is a smart choice for a puppy's favorite napping spot, because puppies drool, shed, and have the occasional accident. A handmade quilt like this one is lovely, but keep it for supervised cuddles if your dog tends to chew fabric, since swallowed threads can cause problems that need a vet's attention.
This one is far past worrying about any of that. The mug is cooling, the books remain unread, and the long, slow breaths of a Basset puppy are doing a better job than any lullaby.
