Walt Cast His Line Off the Old Dock. The Most Patient Fisherman Has Fur.
The line is in the water and the pond is perfectly still, which suits everyone just fine. Walt, in a camouflage cap, holds his rod loosely and leans toward June, who smiles back from beside him in a matching cream sweater with a brown patterned band. Spare rods and a green tackle box rest on the weathered planks, a garden hose coils across the lawn, and a neighbor's house peeks through the trees. Sitting at the front of the dock, Mabel the tortoiseshell keeps a serious watch, clearly hoping that today's catch will be shared with the most patient fisherman of all.
Cats and fishing gear need some careful supervision. Hooks, lures and fishing line can be very dangerous if a cat bats at them, steps on them or swallows them, and line can cause serious internal injuries. Keep tackle boxes closed, never leave baited hooks lying around, and pick up any stray bits of line before you leave the dock. If you think your cat has swallowed a hook or string, do not pull on it; call your vet right away. As for sharing the catch, plain, fully cooked fish without bones or seasoning can be an occasional treat, but raw fish is best avoided.
Whether the fish are biting or not, a quiet morning on the water with the people you love is never wasted. Mabel would just like it noted that she is still waiting.
