Rain Pouring Off the Porch Roof, and Mabel Spotted Something in the Yard

AI imagetortoiseshell catrainy dayfront porch

Rain pours off the edge of the porch roof in silver streaks, drumming softly on the boards, and nobody here has anywhere else to be. Walt and June sit close together on a cushioned bench, gazing out at the dripping trees and the gray sky beyond the railing, their cream sweaters keeping off the damp chill. Up front, Mabel the tortoiseshell fills the frame with her striking patchwork face, bright yellow-green eyes wide and alert, a dash of orange running down her nose. She seems far more interested in whatever is moving out in the yard than in the weather itself.

Many cats are curious about rain but would rather watch it than walk in it, and a covered porch is the perfect compromise. The sound and movement of falling water, along with birds and bugs that stir after a storm, can be very engaging for an indoor cat. If your cat spends time on a porch, make sure railings and gaps are secure enough that they cannot slip through, and bring them in if thunder starts, since loud storms can frighten some cats into hiding or bolting. A quiet, covered retreat inside the house gives a nervous cat somewhere safe to wait out the noise.

Rainy days have a way of slowing everything down in the nicest sense. Walt, June and Mabel are making the most of this one, together and perfectly dry.
