Grandpa Sat Down to Knit a Scarf. Jasper Had Other Plans for the Yarn.
Grandpa's knitting session is not going entirely to plan. Sitting on a cozy floral couch in a tan cable-knit cardigan, his reading glasses low on his nose, he carefully works his wooden needles with focused hands. A basket of yarn balls, a mug of tea, a stack of books, and a pair of glasses on the side table make the living room feel lived-in and warm. But stretched across his lap, wrapped in loop after loop of cream yarn, is Jasper the Bengal, one paw clutching a strand and his eyes fixed on the needles with total intensity.
Bengals are playful, athletic cats with strong hunting instincts, and a moving strand of yarn is almost irresistible to them. It is fun to watch, but string and yarn need careful supervision with any cat. If a cat swallows a long strand, it can become caught in the intestines and lead to a serious emergency. The tiny barbs on a cat's tongue make it hard for them to spit string back out. Keep yarn stored in a closed basket or bag when not in use, and never leave a cat alone with loose strands. Wand toys and kicker toys offer a safer outlet for that hunting drive. If you think your cat swallowed string, call your vet promptly.
Grandpa may not finish that scarf tonight, but he has certainly been well entertained. With Jasper on the job, every knitting project comes with a built-in comedy show.
