Grandma and Grandpa Started a Game of Checkers. Misty Appointed Herself Referee.
Red pieces on one side, black on the other, and a very serious referee on the third. Grandma, in her soft grey cardigan and floral blouse, is about to make her move while Grandpa in his blue plaid shirt watches with a knowing grin. On the porch, flower pots and garden tools frame the scene, and a fence and leafy trees peek out beyond. Right at the corner of the table, Misty the Russian Blue rests her chin on the wooden edge, her green eyes half closed and fixed on the board.
Simple games like checkers, cards, and puzzles can be a wonderful part of daily life for older adults. They offer a bit of friendly competition, a reason to sit together, and gentle exercise for the mind. Pets add to those moments in their own way. A cat that wants to be near the action provides company, a reason to laugh, and a calming presence. Russian Blues in particular often bond closely with a few favorite people and like to stay nearby without being demanding. They may follow their humans from room to room and quietly settle in wherever the family gathers.
Nobody is quite sure whether Misty is rooting for Grandma or Grandpa. Perhaps she is just waiting for someone to drop a checker on the floor so she can bat it under the porch swing. Either way, she clearly would not miss this game for the world.
