The Hammock Between the Oaks Was Carrying a Double Load Today
The woven hammock hangs low between two sturdy oak trunks, and it's carrying a double load today. Grandpa has sunk deep into the netting with his eyes closed and mouth relaxed, his white mustache rising and falling with each slow breath. His fishing vest, cluttered with tools and clips, is still on. Draped across his lap lies Domino, head resting on the hammock's edge, eyes drowsily half open. The scene feels like a dream: the oaks seem to grow right up through a cozy, sunlit room, with a couch, potted plants, and a big bright window just behind them.
Sharing a nap with a big dog is a wonderful comfort, but hammocks can be tricky for dogs. The swaying motion and lack of firm footing can unsettle them, and a sudden jump can lead to a tumble or a strained leg. If your dog likes to join you, make sure the hammock is rated for the combined weight and securely anchored, help your dog in and out rather than letting them leap, and stay close. Dalmatians are medium to large, muscular dogs, so a sturdy setup is important. A comfortable dog bed placed right beside the hammock is a great alternative for dogs who prefer solid ground.
Domino seems perfectly at home up here, though, and Grandpa doesn't seem to mind the extra weight. Some afternoons are just made for swaying gently and dozing off together.
