The Porch Light Was On, and Grandma Carried Maple Home the Last Few Steps

AI imagegrandmacalico catporch steps

Evening has settled over the yard, the porch light is glowing, and Grandma is bringing her favorite companion home. She stands at the foot of the old wooden porch steps, holding Maple snugly against her chest with both arms. The calico rests her chin on Grandma's forearm, eyes open and calm, perfectly content to be carried the last few feet. Grandma's face crinkles into a warm smile. Autumn leaves are scattered across the steps, rubber boots and a basket sit by the door, and a folded blanket hangs over the rail.

Carrying a cat comfortably is all about support. Slide one hand under the chest behind the front legs and use your other arm to support the hindquarters, keeping the cat close to your body. Cats feel more secure when all four legs are supported rather than dangling. For older adults, carrying a pet up stairs can affect balance, so it helps to keep one hand free for the railing whenever possible, or let the cat walk up on their own. Many cats are happy to follow their person up the steps. Good lighting on porches and walkways also prevents trips, especially on dark autumn evenings.

A cat who relaxes in your arms like Maple does is showing a great deal of trust, built over countless gentle moments together.

The day's walk is done, the porch light is on, and home is just a few steps away.
