Kenji Started Reading Out Loud. By Chapter Two He Had an Audience of One.

Curled into the cushions of a well-loved couch, Kenji holds an open paperback and reads aloud, his mouth mid-word and his glasses perched just so. Maple has scooted right up beside him, white paws on the blanket, nose lifted almost to his chin as if she does not want to miss a single line. The living room behind them is pure comfort: a brass lamp with a pleated shade, framed family photos on the shelves, a mug on the side table, a potted plant by the window, and a soft throw draped over the arm of the sofa.

Reading to dogs is more than a cute pastime. Many libraries and schools run programs where children practice reading aloud to calm therapy dogs, because a dog listens without judging or correcting, which can make nervous readers feel more relaxed. Adults can enjoy the same benefit. Talking or reading to your dog in a calm voice is also a pleasant way to bond, and dogs often respond to the familiar rhythm of their person's speech. Australian Shepherds tend to be highly attentive to their people, which is part of why they excel at training and canine sports. A quiet session on the couch is good mental downtime after a busy day.

Nobody knows what book Kenji picked tonight, a mystery perhaps, or maybe an old favorite. Judging by Maple's expression, though, it is the best story she has ever heard, and she would like to know how it ends.
