Gus Settled Into His Rocking Chair. Bruno Was Asleep Before the First Creak.
Up close, Bruno is a portrait of total relaxation: big brindle head flat on the wooden floor, jowls slumped, eyes shut tight, and one paw stretched out in front of him. Behind him, Gus sits back in a classic wooden rocking chair, legs crossed at the ankle, wearing a blue flannel shirt and suspenders. His white beard frames a calm, contented expression as he looks down at the snoozing dog. Daylight comes through a gauzy curtain, a knit blanket hangs off the couch, and a few framed pictures and potted plants fill the quiet room.
That flat-out, sprawled sleeping position usually means a dog feels completely safe and comfortable in its surroundings. Boxers often sleep soundly and can be enthusiastic snorers thanks to their short muzzles. Their loose facial skin and jowls also mean some Boxers drool, particularly after drinking or when anticipating food, so many owners keep a towel handy. The folds around the nose and lips can trap moisture and dirt, so wiping them gently now and then helps keep skin healthy. If you notice redness, odor, or irritation in those folds, check in with your vet. As always, keep a careful eye on paws and tails near rocking chair runners.
The chair creaks gently back and forth, Bruno's breathing settles into a deep rhythm, and the whole house seems to slow down. Some afternoons need nothing more than this.
