The First Snow of the Year Fell Overnight. Roy Knew Exactly Who to Show.

Framed by the white window sash, Roy and Copper make a picture of winter contentment. Roy, in a soft gray henley and suspenders, has wrapped both arms around the big Golden Retriever's chest, holding him up to the glass. His eyes crinkle with a wide, happy smile. Copper sits tall in the embrace, his deep mahogany coat thick and glossy, one ear perked a little higher than the other, gazing off toward the snowy yard with intense curiosity. Behind them, a dusting of fresh snow covers the ground, the fence, and the bare branches of the shrubs.

Golden Retrievers generally handle cold weather well thanks to their dense, water-repellent double coat, and many of them adore romping in snow. The undercoat insulates while the longer outer coat helps shed moisture. Even so, winter care still matters. Snow and ice can build up in the fur between their toes, so trimming that hair and checking paws after walks is helpful. Wipe off road salt and de-icers, which can irritate pads and are not safe to lick. Older Goldens, or those with joint stiffness, may be less steady on icy ground, so take it slow on slippery surfaces and ask your vet about joint support if you notice limping.

For now, Copper is content to watch the snowflakes from the comfort of Roy's arms. Later there will surely be a romp in the yard, and a long toweling-off afterward.
