Grandpa Cast His Line Off the Old Dock. His Fishing Buddy Had Questions.

The wooden dock is grey with age and slick in spots, but Grandpa Gus knows every board. He leans on the edge in a knit beanie and flannel shirt, fishing rod angled down toward the dark water, smiling at something just off to the side. That something is Pearl, sitting tall and fluffy on the planks beside him, her head turned upward with an expression that seems to ask how much longer this is going to take. Behind them, a pale yellow house, potted plants, garden tools, and a fence make the scene feel close to home, a quiet fishing spot just steps from the back door.

Plenty of cats are drawn to fishing, and it's not hard to see why. The movement of a line, the smell of bait, and the promise of something wriggling all speak directly to a cat's hunting instincts. A few precautions keep a fishing companion safe. Hooks and fishing line are dangerous if swallowed or stepped on, so keep tackle boxes closed and never leave line lying around. Raw fish is not a good snack for cats, and bait may contain additives that aren't meant for pets. Docks can also be slippery, so a harness and a watchful eye are a smart idea for any cat near water. If a hook or line is swallowed, go straight to your vet.

Whether or not anything bites today, Gus already has good company. And Pearl clearly believes the best part of fishing is supervising the person holding the rod.
