Grandpa Fell Asleep Out on the Lawn at Dusk. Somebody Stayed Wide Awake.

The garden lamp has come on, the fence is fading into shadow, and the backyard has gone quiet. Grandpa Earl lies on his side in the grass with his cheek resting on a dark cushion, eyes closed and beard pressed against the fabric, fully surrendered to sleep. Tucked up against his chest, Peaches is the only one still on duty. The pink Sphynx sits crouched with her paws folded beneath her, enormous ears up and green eyes wide open, staring straight ahead as if she's watching over the yard while he rests. Potted plants and a bit of garden clutter line the path behind them.

Cats are often most active around dawn and dusk, which is why many owners notice a burst of alertness in the evening. That timing is a holdover from their hunting instincts, since many small prey animals move around in low light. It also means dusk is when cats are most likely to wander, so indoor cats spending time outdoors should be supervised or kept on a harness. For a Sphynx, evening brings another concern: temperatures can drop quickly once the sun goes down, and without fur, these cats can get chilled fast. Bringing a blanket outside, or heading in as the air cools, keeps a hairless cat comfortable. Damp evening grass can also chill bare skin.

Earl may wake up with a stiff shoulder and a grass print on his arm, but he'll wake up knowing someone had his back the whole time. Peaches takes the night shift very seriously.
