Ruth Wrapped Herself in Her Warmest Blanket by the Fire. It Got Even Cozier.
Flames crackle and glow in the low stone fireplace, sending warm light across a cluttered mantel of plants, books, and little treasures. Ruth has bundled herself into a thick cream cable-knit blanket, wrapping it around both her shoulders and her lap, and Saffron is snuggled right inside it with her. The Abyssinian sits upright in the folds, big ears pricked and amber eyes looking out at the room, while Ruth gazes down at her with a soft, contented expression, her silver braid tucked into the blanket's edge.
Cats love warmth, and a fireside lap is one of the best spots in the house. Their preferred comfort zone runs warmer than ours, which is why they seek out sunbeams, heating vents, and anyone who's holding a blanket. Open fires, though, need some caution. A sturdy fire screen keeps sparks, embers, and curious paws apart, and a cat should never be left alone in a room with an open flame. Store matches, lighters, and fire-starting supplies out of reach. Giving your cat a warm bed a safe distance from the hearth lets it enjoy the heat without getting too close.
Tonight, though, Saffron has found her own perfect spot, bundled inside Ruth's blanket. With the fire popping softly and nowhere to be until morning, it's hard to imagine a cozier evening than this one.
