Dottie Pulled the Plaid Quilt Up by the Fire. Pearl Moved In Right Away.

A fire crackles in the stone hearth, and winter sunlight pours through the window beside it. Dottie has nestled deep into an overstuffed chair, wrapped in a big blue-and-cream plaid quilt, her soft cream sweater buttoned up and her silver curls glowing in the light. A mug, a pair of glasses, and a basket of yarn sit within easy reach. Pearl has claimed the very best spot of all: right in the middle of the quilt on Dottie's lap, sitting upright with paws tucked, green-gold eyes calm and content as Dottie smiles down at her.

Cats are natural heat seekers, and a lap under a quilt next to a fire is about as good as it gets for them. Their comfort zone runs warmer than ours, which explains their love of sunny windows and warm laundry. Still, fireplaces call for some care. A sturdy fire screen keeps sparks and embers away from curious paws and fluffy tails, and a cat should never be left alone with an open flame. Store fire tools, matches, and lighters out of reach, and offer a cozy bed a safe distance from the hearth so your cat has a warm option even when your lap isn't available.

Today, though, the lap is very much available. Dottie and Pearl look ready to stay right here until the fire burns down to embers.
