Dottie Sat Down in Her Rocking Chair, Then Looked Down and Froze

Bright, airy light floods the room, falling across bare wood floors, a basket overflowing with balls of yarn, a little side table with a mug and books, and a leafy plant in a terracotta pot. Dottie sits back in her old wooden rocking chair, silver hair pinned up, wearing a soft cream cardigan and loose linen pants, gazing down with a tender smile. Stretched out on the woven rug at her feet, Pearl is fast asleep, white body curled loosely, one paw tucked under her chin, eyes shut tight and the very tip of her tail curled in contentment.

Many cats love to sleep close to their people, and choosing the floor right at your feet is often a sign of trust and attachment. Rocking chairs, though, can be a hidden hazard for pets who nap nearby, since the curved runners can catch a tail or paw when the chair tips back. A quick glance down before rocking becomes second nature for many cat owners. Some people place a soft cat bed just to the side of the chair, which lets the cat stay close without being directly in the runners' path. Yarn baskets should also be kept tidy, since swallowed yarn can be dangerous.

Dottie, wisely, isn't rocking at the moment. With Pearl sleeping this peacefully, the chair can stay perfectly still for as long as she needs.
