Dottie Set a Pretty Breakfast Table on the Patio. A Paw Appeared at the Edge.

Sunshine fills the small patio, lighting up pots of herbs and succulents, a green watering can, and a pale wooden fence. The table is set for a leisurely breakfast: avocado on toast, strawberries and blueberries, a pat of butter, a glass of lemon water, and a mug of milky coffee. Dottie, in her cozy cable-knit cardigan with her silver hair pinned up, is laughing down at the table, because Pearl has decided to join in. The white cat has reached up with one paw onto the tablecloth, golden eyes bright, clearly hoping breakfast is a shared event.

Sharing breakfast with a cat is sweet, but a plate like this has a few items to keep away from pets. Avocado can upset animals' stomachs and its pit is a choking hazard. Butter is high in fat, and caffeinated drinks like coffee are harmful to cats. Fruit isn't necessary for cats, who are obligate carnivores, and grapes and raisins in particular are dangerous for some pets. A small piece of plain cooked egg or meat is a much better choice if you want to offer a little something. Keeping a few cat treats handy at breakfast can help your cat feel included.

Pearl will probably settle for a scratch behind the ears and maybe a treat from Dottie's pocket. Judging by that laugh, breakfast just got a lot more fun.
