Grandpa Climbed Into His Old Truck. The Passenger Seat Was Already Taken.
The cab of this old pickup has seen a lot of miles, and it shows: a cracked steering wheel, tools on the dashboard, rags on the seat, and a water bottle rolling near the windshield. Grandpa Gus sits behind the wheel with the biggest grin of the day, crinkly eyes and all. Right beside him, Sunny has taken the passenger seat like it was reserved in her name. She leans toward him with her mouth open in a happy pant, her blue collar bright against her pale coat. Through the windshield, you can just make out a cluttered yard with potted plants, boots, and a yellow watering can.
Few things make a Labrador happier than going along for the ride, but safety matters in the car. A loose dog can be thrown forward during a sudden stop, and a dog in the front seat can be seriously hurt by an airbag. Many vets and safety groups suggest the back seat with a crash-tested harness, a secured crate, or a cargo barrier. Keep windows open only a little so your dog cannot jump out or get hit by debris. And never leave a dog alone in a parked car on a warm day. Temperatures inside a vehicle can climb dangerously fast, even with the windows cracked.
Wherever this truck is headed, the hardware store, the lake, or nowhere in particular, Sunny is all in. For her, the best part of any errand is the company.
