Grandpa Thought He Was Leading the Evening Walk. The Dachshund Disagreed.

The dirt road stretches back toward a hazy horizon, lined with tall dry grass and scattered autumn leaves. Out front, closest to the camera, Pickles the dapple Dachshund has taken the lead. Her scruffy silver-and-tan coat is a little wind-tousled, her blue collar sits loose around her neck, and her amber eyes look up with an earnest, slightly worried expression, as though she is waiting for the next instruction. A few steps behind, Grandpa Ray strolls along in his cap, plaid shirt, and khaki vest, gazing off toward the fields with a calm, thoughtful look. The evening light has turned soft and golden.

Dachshunds may have short legs, but many of them have plenty of stamina and love a good walk. Regular, moderate exercise helps keep them at a healthy weight, which is one of the best ways to protect their long backs. Steady walks on even ground are usually better for them than lots of jumping or stairs. Because they were bred to follow scents and chase small animals, Dachshunds can be tempted to bolt after a rabbit or squirrel, so a leash or a very solid recall is wise on country roads. At dusk, a reflective collar or a small clip-on light helps drivers spot a low-to-the-ground dog.

Pickles may be the shortest member of this walking team, but she clearly considers herself the navigator. Grandpa Ray seems more than happy to follow.
