Ruth and Harold Took a Stroll Through the Pumpkin Patch. Saffron Insisted on Leading.

Autumn has filled the backyard with orange. Plump pumpkins sit among curling, drying vines, a basket overflows with smaller gourds, and a blue watering can rests beside a pair of garden gloves. Ruth and Harold stroll hand in hand down the dirt path, Ruth in a green cardigan and jeans with her silver hair in a bun, smiling up at Harold, who wears a blue plaid shirt and khakis and grins down at her. Leading the way is Saffron, tail held high like a flag, trotting ahead with purpose and glancing back as if to say, "This way, keep up."

Cats walking ahead with a high, upright tail are usually feeling confident and friendly, and many cats like to lead their people on a familiar route. If your cat explores the garden in fall, watch for seasonal hazards. Rotting or moldy pumpkins can cause stomach upset if nibbled, and some autumn decorations, like certain plants or small ornaments, can be harmful if chewed. Mums, a popular fall flower, can be toxic to cats. Cats also tend to explore piles of leaves, which may hide sharp sticks or ticks, so a quick check of the coat after outdoor time is a good idea.

Saffron clearly feels right at home leading this little parade through the patch. Ruth and Harold seem perfectly happy to follow.

Maybe they are picking out the perfect pumpkin for the porch, or maybe they are just enjoying the crisp air together. Either way, it is a lovely autumn stroll.
