Grandpa Harold Just Wanted His Morning Coffee on the Steps. Pudding Had a Condition.
The paint on the porch steps is peeling, the boots by the door are muddy, and Grandpa Harold wouldn't trade this morning spot for anything. He sits on the bottom step in his red plaid flannel, glasses on, holding a plain ceramic mug up close to savor that first sip of coffee. Sprawled across his lap is Pudding, her long cream fur fluffed and slightly windblown, chocolate paws hanging over his knee, blue eyes squinting toward the camera with the satisfied air of a cat who has already claimed the best seat. A potted plant and garden bits dot the green yard behind them.
Morning routines matter to cats, who tend to thrive on predictability. Many will show up at the same spot at the same time every day once they learn a pattern, especially if it involves a lap. Ragdolls, known for their affectionate, laid-back nature, are particularly likely to seek out this kind of daily one-on-one time. Just be careful with hot drinks when a cat is nearby: a sudden stretch or jump can cause a spill and a burn for either of you. Coffee should never be shared, since caffeine is toxic to cats. Their own breakfast, served on schedule, will keep them happy.
There may be chores waiting and a whole day ahead, but for now Harold has his coffee and Pudding has her lap. Few mornings start more peacefully than that, and neither of them seems in any hurry to move.
