The Rain Came Down So Hard the Yard Disappeared. Pudding Knew Exactly Where to Sit.
The rain is coming down hard enough to blur the whole backyard into a silver haze, and the porch light glows warm against the gloom. Grandpa Harold sits close to the edge of the covered porch in his red plaid flannel, a faint smile on his face as he watches the storm roll through. Pudding sits upright against his side, her thick cream ruff fluffed and her dark ears perked toward the sound of water drumming on the roof. Her blue eyes are calm and curious. Rubber boots, a watering can, potted plants, and a towel draped over the railing fill the cozy corner around them.
A covered porch like this one is a wonderful way for a cat to experience the outdoors safely, and it's part of why enclosed porches and catios have become so popular. Ragdolls are generally recommended as indoor cats because of their trusting, laid-back nature, but they still benefit from fresh air, new sounds, and interesting smells. A screened porch, a secure window box, or a fully enclosed catio lets a cat enjoy the weather without the risks of traffic, predators, or getting lost. Add a cozy perch, a water bowl, and shade, and many cats will happily spend hours watching the world go by.
For Harold and Pudding, a rainy afternoon isn't a ruined day at all. It's a front-row seat to nature's own show. Some of the best moments come from simply sitting still and listening together.
