Abuela Carmen Packed a Beach Bag for the Boardwalk. Mango Only Cared About One Thing.
The breeze off the water is warm and salty, and Abuela Carmen has found a weathered bench on the boardwalk to enjoy it. She's in an olive tee and her floral apron, gray curls tousled by the wind, gently stroking the thick orange fur of the cat sprawled across her lap. Mango sits comfortably, his ruff ruffled, half-squinting with a contented look as the sea air drifts by. A striped beach bag sits beside them with sunscreen and water bottles, a pair of flip-flops lies on the boards, and rocky shoreline and rooftops stretch out in the distance under the late-day light.
Beach outings come with some hazards people don't always notice. Boardwalks and sand often hide litter like bottle caps, food wrappers, plastic, and discarded fishing line, all of which can be dangerous if a curious cat chews or swallows them. Spoiled food scraps and dead sea creatures can also cause stomach upset. Keep your cat close, ideally on a secure harness, and watch what they're sniffing. Sun is another concern: cats with light-colored fur, especially on their ears and nose, can sunburn, so shade matters. And always pack fresh water, since cats shouldn't drink salt water.
Mango seems quite happy to enjoy the view from the safety of Carmen's lap, where the only thing to investigate is a gentle hand scratching behind his ears. The ocean can keep its waves; he's found the best seat on the boardwalk.
