Grandpa Made a Big Bowl of Popcorn for Movie Night. Somebody Else Got There First.
Movie night at Hank's house comes with a co-star. The old man settles into the couch in his red plaid flannel, cradling a heaping bowl of fluffy popcorn in both hands, and smiles down at the Beagle pressed against his side. Rusty has his nose parked right at the rim of the bowl, ears soft, brown eyes looking up with pure innocence. Around them the living room is pleasantly lived in: a rumpled blanket, a tissue box, a mug, a remote control, a pile of magazines, and a candle on the side table glowing low.
Plain, air-popped popcorn with no salt or butter is generally considered an okay occasional snack for dogs in small amounts. The trouble is the movie-theater version. Butter, oil, heavy salt, and seasonings can upset a dog's stomach, and flavorings sometimes include garlic or onion powder, which dogs should not have. Unpopped kernels and hard hulls are another issue, since they can crack teeth or get stuck in the gums. If you want to include your dog in snack time, set aside a few plain puffed pieces before you season the bowl, or keep a stash of dog treats on the couch arm. Beagles will happily accept either.
Whatever is playing on the screen tonight, Rusty seems to have picked his favorite scene already. It is the one with the bowl in it, and he plans to watch it closely until the credits roll.
